Global Link Development Education Centre is looking for a visual artist PDF Print E-mail

Global Link Development Education Centre, 24a New Street, Lancaster, LA1 1EG, 01524 36201

Global Link Development Education Centre is looking for a visual artist to either design (for vinyl printing) or paint the exterior of a fibreglass 23 foot x 6 foot trailer.

Global Link Global Link is constructing a multi-media interactive exhibition about global warming into a trailer which will tour schools, town centres and community and business venues mainly in the North West, but also nationally. Images of the trailer will be hosted on our websites and other linked websites, as well as on publicity flyers.

The theme of the external artwork is ‘Our beautiful Earth (under threat).’ The images should be a celebration of the beauty of our world.

All four sides of the trailer should be painted or designed and printed, but please note that one long side of the trailer will be less visible to the passing public due to a protruding awning.

The image can be either painted, or designed and printed onto vinyl. Colours should be vibrant and images inviting.

The following words (or similar) should be painted/designed into the image. "Climate change is a far greater threat to the world than international terrorism"

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The appointed artist would be engaged on a fixed-term freelance basis and would be responsible for their own tax and national insurance.

Global Link will pay the Arts Council advised rate of £175/day plus materials.

If the artist paints the trailer, this would need to be undertaken at Lynton Trailers in Manchester (who are storing the trailer and can provide cover). Global Link will pay up to a maximum of 20 days in total.
Should the design/vinyl printing option be chosen it would be the artist’s responsibility to liase with a printing company in Manchester (eg Astra Signs 0161 832 2429). The cost of the artist’s design, materials and printing should not exceed £4500.

Should photographs be used it is the artists’ responsibility to procure copyright.

Timescale: ideally the work would be undertaken in December, or as soon as possible thereafter.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Submissions

Artists are invited to express their interest by submitting to Global Link by November 6th:

  • examples of previous work
  • a current CV
  • an indication of how you would intend to undertake the work, including some preliminary sketches
  • an indication of costs
  • The names and addresses of two appropriate referees.

Respondents will be considered by an appointing panel and a shortlist of no more than three applicants will be invited for interview. Travel expenses to interview will be paid by Global Link.

Interviews

Artists selected for interview will be expected to present their work in relation to the above criteria and suggest ways in which their approach would lend itself to this particular commission.

Interviews will take place in the week of November 13th.

PROJECT OUTLINE

The exhibition is being funded by the Climate Challenge Fund, a Government fund set up to raise awareness of climate change. Global Link is a development education centre based in Lancaster, which exists to raise awareness of global development, environment and human rights issues. We have designed several previous multi-media interactive exhibitions about asylum-seeking, including our current touring trailer ‘Escape to Safety’ which is built into a 40 foot trailer and painted by Kurdish artist Rebwar Saeed (www.globallink.org.uk )
